FC Produções Teatrais – The Three Captains

Introduction

The Captain is one of the most charismatic characters of the Commedia dell’Arte Theatre.
Descending from the Miles Gloriosus by Plauto, the Captain is a blusterer who pretends posing as a mercenary knight, flaunting his adventures, deeds and  sentimental conquests.
In reality he’s a loser, a coward, and his arrogant pomposity astonish and amaze the audience.
In the area of the new creative process of Commedia dell'Arte, the company is developing in its latest productions the features of these three Captains, who lives in the XVIII Century and introduce themselves to the audience to tell their feats.
One Captain, who represents the great Portuguese sailors and discoverers, engages for a shipping a German captain, who has problems of dual personality, and a Spanish captain, singer and womanizer.
The three men go aboard a ship that sinks in the sea and through a mysterious time travel they are carried to our present time, at the Terreiro do Paco, port in the historical center of Lisbon during an event on 1st of May.
At their arrival, they are mistaken for the rescuer of the country, a new troika to defend Portugal.
In the tradition of Commedia dell'Arte, the actors represent the stage, the space of Renaissance streets, using mime, live music, dance, fencing and, above all, the mask.
They are the May Captains, who arrive a week late on 25th of April.
